Widow's Basic Pension - BWP (Payable under the National Pensions Act 1976)

Amount payable as from July 2024 – Rs 14000

The BWP is payable to a person who is residing in Mauritius provided that she

  1. is a widow under the age of 60;
  2. was civilly or religiously married;
  3. has not contracted a subsequent civil or religious marriage;
  4. In the case where both the widow and the late husband were non-citizens, the widow must have resided in Mauritius for at least 5 yearsin aggregate in the ten years preceding the claim, one of those five years being immediately before the claim; and
  5. Payment of the pension ceases on re-marriage.
  1. Birth Certificates and National Identity Cards (for both applicant and deceased husband).
  2. Marriage Certificate issued after death of late husband.
  3. Marriage Certificate from Muslim Family Council (for religious marriage).
  4. Death Certificate of late husband.
  5. Bank Name and Bank Account Number. In the case of a joint account, the National Identity Card(s) of the Joint account holder(s) should be produced.
  1. Passport (both Mauritian and foreign).
  2. Proof of address (any Utility Bill).

Application may be registered at the Social Security Office nearest to the applicant’s locality.
