Orphan’s Benefit (OB)
- Payable where :-
- an employee or self-employed dies as a result of an industrial injury or has disappeared during the course of his employment and leaves one or more orphans;
- the orphan is under the age of 16 or is under the age of 23 and receiving full-time education; and
- is not married.
- The Orphan’s Benefit is payable to:-
- the guardian of the orphan; or
- such other person as the National Pensions Officer may determine; and
- devoted by the person receiving it for the exclusive benefit of the orphan.
The OB is equal to 15% of the half-monthly earnings of the employee or self-employed but shall in no case, be less than the Orphan’s Pension under section 5 of the National Pensions Act.
Formula: [15% *(50% * monthly earnings of the deceased employee or self-employed)].
- Birth Certificates of each orphan, deceased parents, guardian;
- Marriage Certificate of parents, guardian (if applicable);
- National Identity Cards of deceased parents, guardian, orphan (if aged 18 years and above);
- Death Certificates of parents; and
- Bank Account Number of guardian and Name of Bank. In the case of a joint account, the National Identity Card(s) of Joint account holder(s) should be produced.
Application may be registered at the Social Security Office nearest to the applicant’s locality.
