Basic pensions and Allowances are financed by the Government on a Universal Basis, i.e., without means-test and are paid at a prescribed rate as per the Second Schedule of the National pensions Act 1976.
GENERAL CONDITIONS
1. Basic Pensions are payable to persons residing in Mauritius.
2. A basic benefit in respect of a period during which the beneficiary is absent from Mauritius shall be paid for only a period not exceeding six months in aggregate in any period of twelve consecutive months.
3. Where the beneficiary has been paid for a period of 6 months' absence, no basic benefit shall be payable for any further absence until he has resided in Mauritius for a period of not less than six consecutive months.
4. No benefit shall be paid in respect of any period during which a beneficiary is serving a term of imprisonment or detained in legal custody.
5. Basic Benefit to be reduced by ¾ if stay in hospital exceeds three months.
Basic Pensions and Allowances
Basic Retirement Pension - BRP
The BRP is payable to every person aged 60 or over and residing in Mauritius.
(a) (i) In the case of a citizen under the age of 70, the person should have resided in Mauritius for an aggregate period of 12 years since attaining the age of 18;
(ii) This residence qualification does not apply for those aged 70 years and above.
(b) For non-citizens, the person must have resided in Mauritius for at least 15 years in aggregate since attaining the age of 40, three of those fifteen years being immediately before his claim.

In the case of a joint account, the National Identity Card(s) of Joint account holder(s) should be produced.
(v) Passports (both Mauritian and foreign).
(vi) Proof of address (any utility bill).
Application may be registered at the Social Security Office nearest to the applicant's locality.
Widow's Basic Pension- BWP
The BWP is payable to a person who is residing in Mauritius provided that she- (i) is a widow under the age of 60;
- (ii) was civilly or religiously married;
- (iii) has not contracted a subsequent civil or religious marriage;
- (iv) In the case where both the widow and the late husband were non-citizens, the widow must have resided in Mauritius for at least 5 years in aggregate in the ten years preceding the claim, one of those five years being immediately before the claim; and
- (v) Payment of the pension ceases on re-marriage .

(iii) Marriage Certificate from Muslim Family Council (for religious marriage).

In the case of a joint account, the National Identity Card(s) of Joint account holder(s) should be produced.
(vi) Passport (both Mauritian and foreign).
(vii) Proof of address (any Utility Bill).
Application may be registered at the Social Security Office nearest to the applicant's locality.
Orphan's Pension- BOP and Guardian's Allowance - GABOP is payable to a person whose parents, excluding stepparents, are dead, unknown or have disappeared provided that (i) he is not more than 16 years old;
- (ii) in the case of an orphan who is receiving full-time education, he is not more than 23 years old and
- (iii) is not married; and
- (iv) in the case where the orphan is a non-citizen, either he or one of the parents must have resided in Mauritius for at least five years in aggregate in the ten years preceding the claim, one of those five years being immediately before the claim.
- GA – payable to the person having the custody of the orphan(s) provided that
- (i) Not more than one guardian's allowance is payable irrespective of the number of orphans and in respect of the same household; and
- (ii) In the case of a non-citizen, the guardian must have resided in Mauritius for at least five years in aggregate in the ten years preceding the claim, one of those five years being immediately before the claim.

- (vi) Certificate(s) of School Attendance for orphan aged 17 years and above.
- (vii) Bank Name and Bank Account Number.
In the case of a joint account, the National Identity Card(s) of Joint account holder(s) should be produced. - (viii) Passport (where applicable).
- (ix) Proof of address (any Utility Bill).
Application may be registered at the Social Security Office nearest to the applicant's locality.
Child's Allowance - CA(a) Child's Allowance is payable to beneficiaries drawing a Widow's Basic pension, an Invalid's Basic Pension or/and a Survivor's Pension provided that the child
(i) Is of legitimate, natural, stepchild or adopted issue;
- (ii) Is living with or wholly or substantially maintained by the person concerned;
- (iii) Is born not later than 300 days after the death of the husband (in the case of a Widow's Basic or/and Survivor's pension);
- (iv) Is under the age of 15 or 20 if in full-time education or between 20 and 23 years old if pursuing a full –time course at a Higher Education Institution; and
- (v) Must not be in receipt of an Orphan's or Invalid's Basic Pension.
- (b) CA is payable in respect of not more than 3 children.

Application may be registered at the Social Security Office nearest to the applicant's locality.
Invalid's Basic Pension - BIPBIP is payable to a person residing in Mauritius provided that he is
- (i) under the age of 60;
- (ii) certified by a Medical Board or Medical Officer to be incapacitated to a degree of at least 60 per cent and for a period of at least 12 months;
- (iii) and in the case of a non-citizen, he must have resided in Mauritius for at least five years in aggregate in the ten years immediately before the claim, one of those five years being immediately before the claim.

Inmate's Allowance
Inmate's Allowance is payable to the inmate of Government Subsidized (Charitable) Institutions provided that- (i) He would otherwise have qualified to receive a basic pension before his admission to such an institution.
- (ii) The first month in the charitable institution is disregarded.

Carer's Allowance to a beneficiary of Basic Retirement Pension (BRP-SH)
Carer's Allowance is payable to
- (i) a beneficiary of Basic Retirement Pension, who is disabled to an extent of not less than 60 per cent; and
- (ii) needs constant care and attention of another person as recommended by the Medical Board or Medical Officer.

Carer's Allowance is payable to
- (i) beneficiary of an Invalid's Basic pension; and
- (ii) who needs constant care and attention of another person as recommended by the Medical Board or Medical Officer.

Social Benefits
Retirement Benefit - SRB(a) SRB is payable to every citizen residing in Mauritius provided that he has
(i) reached retirement age; and
- (ii) resided in Mauritius for at least 12 years in aggregate since his eighteenth birthday.
- (iii) Where the beneficiary is absent from Mauritius for a continuous period -
a. not exceeding 6 months in any period of 12 consecutive months, he shall continue to be entitled to the retirement benefit. - b. exceeding 6 months in any period of 12 consecutive months, he shall be entitled to the retirement benefit provided he has –
- (i) reached retirement age;
- (ii) resided in Mauritius for at least 12 years in aggregate since his eighteenth birthday; and
- (iii) paid the social contribution for a period of at least half the number of years between 1 September 2020 and the date of making the application for the benefit.
- (b) payable to a non-citizen residing in Mauritius provided that he has
- (i) reached retirement age;
- (ii) resided in Mauritius for at least 12 years in aggregate; and
- (iii) paid the social contribution for a period of at least half the number of years between 01 September 2020 and the date of making the application for the benefit.
- (c) Payable also to a person aged 60 or above provided that he
- (i) is employed in a specified sector as defined in the fourth schedule to the SCSB Act 2021;
- (ii) has opted to retire before attaining the age of 65;
- (iii) has resided in Mauritius for at least 12 years in aggregate since his 18th birthday;
- (iv) is not in employment whilst deriving the retirement benefit; and
- (v) has been employed in the specified sector for at least 10 consecutive years at the time of retirement.

Disability Allowance - SDASDA is payable to a person residing in Mauritius provided that he
- (i) is under the age of 60;
- (ii) suffers from a disability ( i.e. loss of physical faculty) of not less than 40 per cent and not exceeding 59 per cent due to an injury or medical condition as specified in the sixth schedule of the SCSB Act 2021; and
- (iii) is not in receipt of a basic pension under the National Pensions Act.

CONTRIBUTIONS MADE TO SIPF
Refund of contributions made to the Sugar Industry Pension Fund (SIPF)
Payable to former sugar industry workers who had contributed to the SIPF before joining the National Pensions Scheme, on
- (i) reaching the age of 60;
- (ii) retirement on ground of ill-health; or
- (iii) retirement under the
- (a) Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS)
- (b) Early Retirement Scheme (ERS)
- (c) the context of Factory closure (FC)
