GIS \u2013 27 March 2025:<\/b>\u00a0Government remains committed to ensuring greater inclusivity, fairness, and opportunities for persons with disabilities, and plans to review the current disability laws, pensions\u00a0assessment criteria, and associated benefits.\u00a0 In that regard, the public and civil society organisations will be invited\u00a0to submit their proposals\u00a0to the authorities\u00a0by\u00a010\u00a0April\u00a02025.<\/p>

The Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mr\u00a0<\/strong>Ashok\u00a0<\/strong>Kumar Subron, made this\u00a0<\/strong>announcement,\u00a0today,\u00a0in Port-Louis\u00a0during a ceremony\u00a0organised to\u00a0honour Dr\u00a0(Miss)\u00a0Ameegah Paul, the youngest recipient of the\u00a0“Member of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean” (MSK)\u00a0National Day Award 2025.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0<\/strong>Junior Minister\u00a0of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mr\u00a0Kuvalayan Kugan Parapen,\u00a0was also present.<\/p>

In his address Minister Subron\u00a0said that\u00a0a key\u00a0aspect\u00a0of the\u00a0review\u00a0relates to the assessment criteria for\u00a0the grant of\u00a0disability pensions and the evaluation process conducted by the\u00a0Medical\u00a0Board. \u2018Restrictive policies should not penalise individuals with disabilities and the current system would be revised to ensure greater fairness\u2019, he added.<\/p>

According to him,\u00a0while\u00a0the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act<\/em>\u00a02023\u00a0has already been passed, it has yet to be officially proclaimed.\u00a0\u00a0Mr Subron pointed out\u00a0the\u00a0proposals of the\u00a0public and civil society organisations\u00a0on potential\u00a0amendments\u00a0to the existing laws by the April deadline\u00a0will be examined.<\/p>

Several proposed amendments were\u00a0also\u00a0outlined by the Minister. They comprise extending the time allotted for assessing disability claimants from five to ten minutes;\u00a0reconsidering the 60% disability threshold for pension eligibility to promote inclusivity;\u00a0and revising the existing assessment criteria to ensure that no person with a disability is left behind.<\/p>

The Minister\u00a0furthermore\u00a0commended Dr Paul for her resilience and achievements particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and encouraged her to be a role model to others. He urged people suffering from disabilities to draw inspiration from her journey and lead a dignified life.<\/p>

Junior Minister Parapen, for his part,\u00a0underscored the importance of empowering social workers and non-governmental organisations by providing them with specialised training. This, he said, will enable them to better assist individuals with disabilities and cater to their needs more effectively.<\/p>

As for\u00a0Dr Ameegah Paul, she\u00a0expressed gratitude to the\u00a0Ministry for recognising her contributions. She attributed her success to the patience, dedication, and perseverance of her parents, highlighting that the award is not just for her, but for everyone who has played a role in her journey.<\/p>

Dr Ameegah Paul was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and cardiac complications at the tender age of three. She has dedicated her life to advocating for those who are often marginalised\u00a0including\u00a0persons with disabilities, women and the elderly.<\/p>

Today,\u00a0Ms Paul stands as a young distinguished young woman, an activist, an accomplished artist, a global speaker and mentor embodying resilience and excellence. She now serves as Secretary, Event Coordinator and National Empowerment Coordinator at the\u00a0Association Pour La Protection Des Droits Des Handicap\u00e9s<\/i>.<\/p>
